We Are Cows.. I mean, that's what we eat.. I mean you know!
My friend, Jason just had this video on his blog, and as I watched it I thought, "Most people are completely blind to the fact that we eat too much meat. I would have never known if someone didn't tell me." So I felt I should share this. As you watch, don't just think about crazy extreme people who become vegetarians, that is not my reccomendation. Just think about how this one concept of eating meat not only affects our bodies, but also affects social justice in other countries which causes immigration problems in America. Also our obsession creates massive amounts of greenhouse gasses from transportation to - well, let's be honest- cow's farts which release incredible amounts of methane.
Furthermore, think about the affects of the way we eat foods that are transported across our country. I was told the other day that the average food travels over 1500 miles before reaching someone's plate. Do you still wonder why gas prices are rising? Couple that with the fact that our population has doubled in the last 50 years, yet meat consumption has multiplied by five hundred percent!
How can it be possible that until the last few weeks, I only thought that the reason to be a vegetarian was to save poor tortured animals, or to lose weight. Yet Food turns out to be an enormous global issue that destroys land, takes away the sense of community, contributes to poverty, and causes extreme greenhouse gasses. We eat seven times as much meat as is recommended on average. Last week I took a cooking class and I realized for the first time that I have been living in a paradigm that a meal is not complete without meat. Why do we assume this? What makes us different from the rest of the world that we think meat is required? As a result, we know that the US is extremely unhealthy, not just by means of obesity, but we have far more cases of Cancer and Diabetes. This needs to be a much bigger story, yet few people have heard this.
I hope you will see it the way I do.
